Unions Against HGH Testing -April 2nd, 2009

Apparently, the sports player’s union is against testing players for synthetic HGH.  Are you high?  I’ve never heard of them being against testing for steroids, but at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if they were.  The discovered side effects of synthetic HGH injections are not as severe as those associated with steroids.  But they banned it, because essentially speaking, it is cheating just like you would get with steroids, not to mention the fact that the FDA has made it a crime to possess or use synthetic HGH, unless of course you suffer from very specific medical conditions.  So apparently, the union has put itself above the federal government.

Either way, I have to wonder what the purpose of this is.  I mean are we trying to protect players, and if so, from what, the consequences of their actions?  I would rather protect the honest players who are just working hard, not using performance enhancing drugs, and are honestly that good.  Would they also be against punishing these players for receiving shipments of synthetic HGH, which is how they used to control it before they developed blood tests that could tell the difference.  Major league sports do not ban HGH enhancers, which basically encourage the body to produce more of its own natural HGH.  They ban the synthetic forms found only in injections.  And if they are using these injections, they really should be talking to the federal government about their punishment anyway.

But apparently the head of the NFL Player’s Union, Gene Upshaw claims, “There is no way I’m having my guys punched for a blood test every time they walk into a locker room.”  Apparently, he doesn’t understand how drug tests work.  You don’t test them every week.  You test them at random, so they never know when it’s coming and therefore never know when they might want to go off a drug they choose to use to avoid being detected.  And frankly, doing weekly tests would be impractical in terms of money as well.  The MLB Unions are also highly opposed, especially considering they’ve lost some of their best players in the past couple years or so for using performance enhancing drugs.  So basically, they’re protecting leagues of guys who feel forced to use illegal and harmful drugs just to keep up with their teammates.

But then again, unions in general have never been known for being logical about most things.  You get plenty of unions demanding benefits and other packages that ultimately drive the employer into the ground, which benefits no one.  I mean it’s great that people can make more money, get better benefits, get time off, etc.  But when the company does not exist to provide those perks, who benefits from that?
