Achondroplasia And HGH -May 1st, 2009

One of the few areas HGH injections are approved for is known as Achondroplasia, more commonly known as dwarfism.  It is the most common form of dwarfism and affects one in every 25,000 births across the world, equally represented in both sexes and all races.  Evidence of this disease extends back to ancient Egypt.

Achondroplasia is generally passed through the generations and genetic mutations.  It is not passed this way in all cases however.  Parents without any history of the disease in their families or persons can have a child with Achondroplasia when a genetic mutation forms in the egg or sperm cell forming the embryo.  In cases such as this, there is usually only one child in the family with Achondroplasia.  However, there is a chance in some cases.  There are higher instances when this individual should marry another dwarf and have children.  Should a child inherit the gene from both parents, they will almost certainly develop a fatal form of Achondroplasia, which is determined through tests at birth by checking a possible defect in chromosome 4.

In short, with this form of dwarfism, there is a failure of the cartilage to form correctly, resulting in significantly shorter and disproportionate limbs.  Children with Achondroplasia generally have poor muscle tone and walk later than usual, have frequent ear infections, and can have serious breathing problems.  Therefore, they are generally closely monitored by qualified physicians.  Some must also have a shunt installed in the brain to allow fluids to drain on a regular basis.

They are always conducting more research on this form of dwarfism.  But they have found that HGH injections can be useful for some children with Achondroplasia.  It is in the early stages of testing, and there have been some cases reported of children gaining some height.  It could theoretically also increase muscle tone, which many of these children lack.  But definitive conclusions have not yet been drawn.  The other alternative is a surgical treatment which can lengthen the leg bones by up to 12 inches.  But it can be extremely painful and it can also lead to long term problems with the leg bones.

It should be noted that people with dwarfism, outside short stature of course, can theoretically lead completely normal lives.  They can play all the same sports, attend all the same schools, it does not in any way affect their intellect.  The medical care taken could be different if they suffer certain complications.  But in many ways, it is not disruptive.
